I discovered this book while working in the school library, and have borrowed it for the summer. Langston Hughes is one of my favorite poets, so I am very happily wandering through this.
Written for children in 1954, he explores the rhythms that fill us and the world around us. From toe tapping to furniture, nature, music, words, machines, and every day life- there are patterns and beats everywhere. It is beautiful, the words circle round, filling the mind and spirit with the wonder of our connections in this world.
"Your rhythm on this earth began first with the beat of your heart."
"Rhythm is something we share in common, you and I, with all the plants and animals and people in the world, and with the stars and moon and sun, and all the whole vast wonderful universe beyond this wonderful earth which is our home."
I am moving through this next booklet, almost feeling pulled by the pulse of it.
(All quotes are from The First Book of Rhythms by Langston Hughes.)
