I've been knitting up these little trees (pattern here). They're quick, easy, fun and have been very good therapy of calm quiet stitching time. A few are on the tree, some have decorated gifts (including a bottle of that pink rosé from yesterday's walk), and others are gathering on the mantel at the edge of the village.
What is it about the mantel? It's my favorite Christmas spot, always has been. (I wrote a bit about it way back here.) It's a place where cozy and magic meet, no matter the chaos of the rest of the house. (And if you do happen to look back, way back there, this is not one of those together years when we have our holiday act all in order- the books haven't made it out, the stockings are in a pile in the corner, and there's a string of dead lights in the center of the tree, but the mantle is a lovely place to be.)
